What is it?
A legally binding
and fair and effective International Treaty to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
Why?
The Kyoto protocol (1997) has not been signed up to by all the major producers of greenhouse gases, and is not independently monitored. The more recent Washington Declaration (2007) is a non-binding.
What can I do?
Join the demonstration in London on 8 December as part of the Global Demonstration on Climate Change.
See http://www.campaigncc.org/
Email President Bush to remind him the world is waiting for the US to ratify the Kyoto protocol:
Why?
It is hard for local councils and local businesses to reduce emissions voluntarily and without help. We need help in the form of tax incentives and legal restrictions. Also, many of our greenhouse gases are produced by national or multinational companies beyond the reach of local councils.
What can I do?
Ask your MP to support a strong climate bill
What is it?
Asking Sheffield City Council to commit to a carbon reduction plan which will cut green house gas emissions city wide by at least 6% per year every year and enable communities and individuals to make a difference.
Why?
Because without strategic targets, the council cannot be held accountable for Sheffield's carbon footprint.
What can I do?
Find out who your local councillor is and lobby them to act on a key sustainability issue such as public transport, local food, domestic energy.
Comment on the Sheffield Development Framework and the absence of prioritisation of sustainability measures in the Framework.
