Who we are

Sheffield Campaign against Climate Change is friendly local group linked to the national Campaign against Climate Change. We believe that action is needed now to avert catastrophic climate change.

Why we need to act

  • The earth’s climate is warming up, causing more extreme weather, floods, draughts, storms and heat waves.
  • Climate scientists now agree the main cause is “greenhouse gases” produced by burning gas and coal.
  • Climate change causes death and suffering for millions of people world wide, mostly the poor.
  • Extreme weather conditions will also affect us and our children in Sheffield.

There is an 8 to 10 year period in which we can act to prevent a “tip over” into catastrophic climate chaos.

What we do

  • National days of action and demonstrations
  • Petition to Sheffield Council
  • Support related national and local campaigns.
  • Film shows and talks for local groups

Campaigns

  • International Treaty to curb greenhouse gas emissions
  • National Climate Change Bill
  • Asking Sheffield City Council to commit to a climate change action plan.
  • Curbing the power of the big oil companies

What you can do!

Here are our latest suggestions for ways in which you can take action to 'Live the Cool Life' and reduce your carbon footprint.  You can take these up on your own, or connect with others to take action together.  together.  August is traditionally when Sheffield has a snooze… so we're devoting this issue to a review of some organisations in Sheffield doing fabulous work around Climate Change – many of which didn’t even exist a year ago! Also some advance dates for the Autumn. Enjoy your holidays!

Sheffield Campaign against Climate Change

Our next meeting is Tues 12th August 7.30 – 9.30pm at Highfield Library, London Rd.

All are welcome – this is a steering meeting rather than an open discussion meeting. We’ll be discussing our campaign objectives, and reporting back on meetings with the council, Climate Camp, and lobbying activities.

Can you help SCACC for an hour or so between 11am-6pm on a stall at Sheffield Fayre Norfolk Park, Sun 24th August? No expertise required – just willingness to chat to the public as part of a team!

Please contact 0114 258 7073 or jenny.patientblueyonder.co.uk

Keep the heat on Gordon!

Gordon Brown recently announced he backed a 'green revolution' for energy - but the UK Government is also considering building eight new coal-fired power stations - starting with a new plant at Kingsnorth in Kent.  Join leaders of the Stop Climate Chaos (SCC) coalition and thousands of individuals, calling on the Prime Minister to show true leadership and stop plans to lock the UK into a high-carbon future! Add your name to the SCC coalition letter at

Current Actions and Events

See the What you can do page for ideas about personal and group actions you can take to 'Live the Cool Life'.  In addition, SCACC is currently asking for help in lobbying councillors.  It is vitally important that we show that there is local interest in prevention of Climate Change, both to our national and to our local representatives.  Whilst other organisations such as FOE, WDM, and Christian Aid have campaign postcards for the national campaigns, SCACC now has postcards which can be completed and sent to local councillors.

For more info, contact Susannah Diamond.

Previous Actions and Events

Climate Ark demonstration on the Moor on Sat 9th Feb

An independent Climate Action Group organised a fantastic 'Climate Ark' demonstration on the Moor on Sat 9th Feb from 10am to 3pm. The Ark functioned as a talking point and as an exhibition, with questions, photographs, and cuddly animals, and there were colouring activities for children. There was a steady trickle of interest from members of the public. Approximately SCACC 75 postcards were completed from members of the public to send to local councillors, and considerably more were completed to send to MPs and to Gordon Brown. For more info, see: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2008/02/391732.htmlhttp://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2008/02/391732.html.

International Day of Action 8th December

In synchrony with demonstrations around the world, we joined people all around the world to demand that world leaders take the urgent action needed in order to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate.

We've been doing well in Sheffield at raising the issue and calling for action on a local level, with our petitions to the council and the motion which was passed at this month's council meeting. This was an opportunity to raise our voices again on a national and international level, and call for urgent action at that level too.

We joined people all around the world to demand that world leaders take the urgent action we need to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate. The aim is to acheive a treaty as described in the "Contract and Convergence" proposal put forward by The Global Commons Institute www.gci.org.ukwww.gci.org.uk.

The demonstration was timed to coincide with the UN climate talks in Bali, and was part of an international day of action; events took place in at least 75 different countries. See www.campaigncc.orgwww.campaigncc.org and www.globalclimatecampaign.orgwww.globalclimatecampaign.org for details of what's happened elsewhere.

London
There was a National Campaign Against Climate Change demonstration on 8th December in London for a fair and effective International Treaty to curb greenhouse gases. Two coaches went down from Sheffield, one organised by SCACC, and the other by Sheffield University students.  The demonstration itself wes very well attended considering the weather, with banners, music, and thought provoking costumes, and the speakers were fantastically inspiring.  A more complete writeup and pictures are available on the national Campaign against Climate Change website.

Sheffield

In Sheffield, a colourful band of several dozen met in pouring rain at Sheffield Town Hall to support simultaneous action worldwide. Organised by Sheffield Campaign Against Climate Change and Sheffield Green Party the determined and cheerful protesters sent a clear message to the world leaders meeting in Bali to set targets for CO2 reduction.
'Less is more!'  was the message: less waste, less cars, less CO2 will offer more health, more public transport, more happiness - and an all important future for our children.

A spontaneous medley of 'South Pacific ' hits helped spread the word:-
Bali! Hi! We're calling!/ Cross the ever-rising sea./ you are such a special island/in our global emergency.
We're gonna wash that Bush right out of our hair/We're gonna wash that carbon out of the air/ We've just one world, and we've no other to spare/ send emissions on their way!
Happy talking talking...'bout the things we need to do. You gotta have a dream,/ if you don't have a dream/ How you gonna reduce CO2?
Bernard Little, Green councillor, spoke on needed and achievable targets for Sheffield, while Nick Clegg, for the Lib Dems spoke on how this crucial issue had just helped topple Howard in Australia -another wake up call to the world.
Meanwhile Antartica herself, (personed by Ismanah Hayes with polar bear in pushchair) made a moving plea for change.

The Photo by Laurence Underhill shows Bardy McNair, Linda Duckenfield and Flis Callow.

Saturday, 30th June 2007 'Cut the Carbon' Cyclecade. Barker's Pool, Sheffield City CentreWe brought global message to Sheffield, with cyclists making a fine splash with flippers, light bulbs, banners and hooters.

The cyclists assembled at St Mary's Church, Bramall Lane at 2pm and proceeded around the city centre to Barker's Pool (opposite the town Hall), where the petition was launched.A poster advertising the event is hosted here as a downlaodable document in Word format:cyclecade poster.doc

This was organised as part of a nationally co-ordinated day of local events.

Other events

We took the SCACC stall and Petition to many local events over summer 2007.

Live the cool life conference,  Saturday, 3rd February 2007. St Mary's Church, Sheffield

Documents relating to the conference:

Petition presented to Sheffield City Council in December, 2006

We obtained 1,400 signatures in support of the following petition and presented it to the full council on December 6th:

"We recognise urgent action is needed now to avert catastrophic climate change, therefore we call on Sheffield council to set targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 3% annually across the city."

Many of us asked questions from the public gallery and we got good local press and radio coverage.
